شديدترين زمين لرزه در چهل سال
پنجمين زلزله شديد در جهان از سال 1900 و شديدترين زمين لرزه در چهل سال اخير با شدت 9/8 درجه در مقياس ريشتر در نزديکی سواحل جزيره سوماترا در اندونزی بامداد يکشنبه به وقوع پيوست که در اثر آن تاکنون 23000 نفر در کشورهای مختلف کشته شده اند.
در اثر اين زلزله امواج دريا در نقاطی به ارتفاع حدود ده متر به وجود آمده همچنين خسارات و تلفات گسترده ای را در کشورهای ساحلی به خصوص سريلانکا، هند، اندونزی و تايلند برجای گذاشته است.
