He was truly one of the greats -- but Joe Rosenthal would be the first to tell you that he wasn't worthy of that honor.
Rosenthal captured the Pulitzer Prize-winning image of the flag-raising on Iwo Jima -- an image that would forever come to symbolize the sacrifice and the efforts of the American military during World War II. The accolades rolled in, but he took them in stride.
Rosenthal's picture has been called the "greatest photograph ever," but he never quite agreed with that assessment.
