IFJ SAYS 2006 WAS DEADLY FOR MEDIA WORKERS
The International Federation of Journalists cited the slaying in Iraq of Associated Press cameraman Aswan Ahmed Lutfallah in its annual report about attacks on journalists. The IFJ said 2006 was the deadliest year for media workers worldwide. There were 155 murders and unexplained deaths, according to the federation. The IFJ also said that in addition to those murdered, 22 journalists were killed accidentally while on duty, pushing the year's overall total to 177. Amid the bleak statistics, the IFJ saw a hopeful development in the U.N. Security Council's unanimous approval on Dec. 23 of a resolution condemning attacks that target journalists in armed conflicts. IFJ General Secretary Aidan White said in a statement Dec. 31: "It is long overdue. This was the only bright spot in a year of unremitting gloom."
